Cool tidbits... Thursday, April 22, 2010

Hi Everyone--

This week has been a blur with soccer, softball, cello, and AWANA (Emmy), track (Chelsea), playgroup (Ellie-Kate), and dance (Britti, Chelsea, and Emmy). The annual dance recital is next week so we face our annual stress of spending countless hours at Stuart's Opera House while also balancing all of the aforementioned activities and sports. Let's just say that certain soccer, softball, and track coaches aren't going to be our "fans" next week!

Although "balance" hasn't been easy this week either, we have had some fun laugh out loud moments over the past couple of days. Thought that we'd share some lighter (and special)moments...

1. I had just returned the conference on Sunday, and I was trying to reconnect with Ellie-Kate. I said, "Come on, Ellie-Kate, hug Mommy." Her little eyes started to twinke, and she laughed as she leaned down and hugged THE DOG, Coco. "Ellie-Kate," I said. She laughed even harder, and Britti said, "Ellie-Kate, who is that?" With brown eyes sparkling, she replied, "Mommy!" Brittany said, "Well, if that's Mommy, who's that?" (pointing to me). "Coco!" she said, laughing. After three more tries, Ellie-Kate giggled as she ran into my arms and called me "Mommy." What a funny girl!!

2. Tonight, she did something similar. We told Ellie-Kate to say good-night to everyone, and she had Emmy left. "Tell Emmy good-night," we said. With eyes twinkling, she ran and hugged her toy stroller, stuffed cow, and panda poster before finally turning to Emmy and hugging her good-night. She has such a fun sense of humor, and she's so smart!!

3. Speaking of which, on Tuesday, she did her first math problem: 1+1-2. To top it later in the night, she figured out the answer to 4+4. She's well on her way to serving as captain of the math team in middle school :)

4. At play group today, Ellie-Kate stepped back before going on a bouncy inflatable everytime that another child came near her. "Baby first," she told each of them, and she allowed each of the other kids to take a turn ahead of her. Let' s just say that a good number of adults commented on her very sweet and kind nature :)

Can't believe that 13 months ago right now, she wasn't with us yet. (Tomorrow is our 13 month anniversary!) What a blessing that she has been!!! Need to dash off and help Chelsea with her homework. Have a great week-end! I'll upload more pics when I get a chance on Saturday or Sunday.

Emmy played shortstop and made two outs on her own!

The team participated in a parade through town before the first game.

CSCA conference-- 4/14/10-4/18/10

We're back from a great time in Cincinnati at the Central States Communication Association conference. Christie left for the conference last Tuesday and spent five days presiding over meetings, participating on panels, and visiting with fellow members. On Thursday, Roger and the girls (except for poor Chelsea who had to stay home for track practice and a meet on Saturday) drove over to Cincinnati. They went with Christie to the welcome reception, listening to a great performance by JW Smith, one of Christie and Roger's OU colleagues, and visiting with lots of old and new friends. Afterward, Christie and Roger went to dinner with CSCA Past Presidents while Britti watched the girls in our amazing suite. As CSCA president, Christie was treated to a great room-- apparently, when guests such as President Obama, Sarah Palin, etc. stay at the Cincinnati Netherlands Hotel, they stay in this very room or another one just like it.

On Friday, Roger and the girls went to a park while Christie went to panels. Roger and Britti joined Christie for the luncheon to watch her pass the gavel to the incoming president while Sarah (one of Britti's friends) watched the little girl in the room. All of us attended the President's party that night and then Britti headed out for the annual pub crawl with other grad and undergrad students.

Although Christie had obligations all day on Saturday, Roger and the girls had to go back to Athens early on Saturday morning so that Emmy could participate in the opening ceremonies and parade for Sandlot softball and then play her first game of the season and so that Ellie-Kate could go to her friend, Kelsey's, birthday party. Meanwhile Chelsea did long jump and ran the 200 in Parkersburg, WV at a track meet, setting a new personal record by jumping 11 feet 10 1/2 inches.

Christie finally got to come home on Sunday. Although exhausted, we all had a great trip, grateful for the opportunities to experience fun and cool things.

Enjoy the pictures from the conference! We'll post pics from the Sandlot game and fun at home when we can later today :)

Update-- 4/10/10

What a week!! We enjoyed a very nice Easter celebration. The performance at church was incredble and inspiring. (I am in awe of the talent that God has granted to members of our church!!) After church, we went to Ponderosa for a buffet (yummy!), and then home for an Easter egg hunt and Easter egg coloring. We concluded the day by flipping channels between the Amazing Race (go cowboys!!) and the Oklahoma women's basketball national semi-final game with Stanford (sorry Sooners...). Although we missed our Britti (still in Indiana with the grandmas), we had a blessed day.

Over the course of this week, three of us (Roger, Christie, and Emmy) were on antibiotics for various illnesses; Britti helped Grandma B. and Great-Grandma in Indiana and then flew home; Chelsea spent countless hours at the track; Emmy started Sandlot softball, and Ellie-Kate practiced her new favorite sentence: "I got it!!" Now that Ellie-Kate has figured out the sentence thing, she is putting them together so much now. Britti returned home (safely, praise God) on Friday night, and she is amazed by Ellie-Kate's verbal development in just eight days. She's our little talker, and she LOVES talking on the phone.

As the pictures reflect, Ellie-Kate just adores to do what the older girls do... talking on the phone, "doing" homework, playing ball, or just plain "going." She was really upset today when she couldn't go along to softball practice and dance rehearsal with Emmy. She wants to play ball NOW, and we're going to have an adventure with her as we try to watch Emmy's soccer and softball games this season. (Ellie-Kate is going to want to head right on out to the field!!)

Roger and I ended the week tonight by going out to dinner as a couple and then coming home and watching some classic episodes of WKRP in Cincinnati. I'm going to be showing four episodes as a mini-marathon at the Central States Communication Association conference in Cincinnati this week, and I needed to finalize my selections. What a funny show! We rarely take time to watch sitcoms, and it was fun to share a few episodes with the girls.

It will also be fun to share our girls with others in the association again. They met Ellie-Kate right after she arrived in the country last year, and I know that they're going to be amazed by her growth and progress. I'll post pics from the conference after we get home next week. Until then, I hope that you enjoy a terrific week. Thank much for caring about our family!!
