Ellie-Kate's 6th Birthday-- January 26, 2014

Grandma B bought Ellie-Kate "Rock-em', Sock-em', Robots"!

Ellie-Kate with all of her presents... Usually, we unwrap presents at night, but, given that we were pretty snowed in, we went ahead and allowed Ellie-Kate to open them in the early afternoon. She was very eager to dig into them :)

Britti and Ellie-Kate with Britti and Ramon's present to her!

Ellie-Kate had a little yellow duck in one of the very first pictures that we ever saw of her... Lately, she's been asking about "her" duck, but the duck from the picture didn't come home with her from China. Roger looked at over 1000 ducks on e-bay and finally stumbled on to this one, and he bought it for her as a birthday present. Yes, she's upstairs sleeping with it now :)

Ellie-Kate's presents! She got her duck, an indoor basketball, Merida, the cast from Frozen, the horse from Tangled, and some clothes :)

Given all of the snow days, Ellie-Kate's castle doll house and Disney princess barbies have made their way downstairs. Now, she also has the "Frozen" castle on the floor too.

We intended this cake for Ellie-Kate's big party at the rec center, but we had to go ahead and buy this one now and order another one for the postponed party. The good news? We hadn't ordered a cake for the family party yet so we just celebrated with this one today.

Roger woke Christie up to the news that the roads hadn't been treated. Although they had been cleared yesterday, the wind blew the snow over the road, in addition to the new snowfall over night. The van definitely couldn't make it up the road so we stayed home from church and watched "Brady Bunch" re-runs. While the girls played downstairs, Roger and Christie did a kick-boxing video. After lunch, we opened presents, went sledding, and then enjoyed dinner at Ponderosa, followed by more Barbies. All in all, a great birthday for Ellie-Kate!

Playing in the snow... January 25, 2014

Coco and Emmy!

Well, if we couldn't have a birthday party because of the snow, we could at least have fun in it! We got at least eight inches of snow, and, as of mid-afternoon, our streets had not been touched. Thus, we got out with sleds and shovels to play and then clear the drive-way. Fortunately, the snow plow came about 2:30 p.m., and we were able to make our way up the hill and to the rec center and Walmart. While the girls and I were in rec center (and Roger was in Walmart), another snow squall hit, and even more snow dumped on the ground. We were able to get Casa take-out and head home for a warm evening of yummy Casa food, Barbies, and a movie (Despicable Me 2). Although not the day that we had expected, we enjoyed it immensely :)

Snow much resilience... January 25, 2014

Hi everyone--

Well, I planned to post an update today, but I didn't figure that I'd be doing it at 12:45 p.m. After a busy morning of activities, about this time, we were supposed to be picking up cake and heading to the rec center, meeting the inflatables guy and setting up for Ellie-Kate's sixth birthday party... Instead, Emmy's basketball game for today got cancelled yesterday around 4 p.m.; Ellie-Kate's game for this morning got cancelled before 8 a.m., and I got the e-mail about Ellie-Kate's tap class just before the inflatables guy called and let me know that it would be too dangerous for him to pull his trailor to Athens for the party due to the snow.

Yes, for the first time all year, the forecasts were correct-- and then some! We did get the two inches over night (and then some), and we have gotten the three inches today (and then some). Right now, we're stuck, literally, at the bottom of our hill. A few of our neighbors, in their four wheel drive vehicles, have managed to make it up, but we're not even going to try until we see a snow plow.

On the plus side, Ellie-Kate was amazing about re-scheduling her party. We told her that we'd do it on February 2, and she said okay and moved on. Meanwhile, I have to admit that I have massive cabin fever. Quite simply, I was in Walmart two days ago, frantically picking out her cake for the party and buying all of the supplies for her party at school, the Daisy Girl Scout meeting, treats for her basketball team, and enough cupcake mix for school, Daisy, basketball, and even church friends. I wasn't thinking about getting snowed in... wasn't thinking about getting enough diet coke to last if we really did get the snow... wasn't thinking about special meals that we could make if we were trapped in our house... wasn't thinking about anything other than all of the activities that got cancelled.

(heavy sigh...) Meanwhile, we're trying to make the best of it. We've played Barbies and worked on AWANA Grand Prix cars... We had enough food for a good lunch, and I'm nursing the very last Diet Coke in the house... As long as that snow plow gets here by evening, I shouldn't be too cranky with a caffeine head-ache. Also on the plus side, the girls definitely have a great sledding base, and we'll go out in the cold for some runs down our hill later this afternoon.

Just watched the video of "Let It Go" on Disney Channel. Doing my best to embrace Elsa's sentiment that "the cold never bothered me anyway." If only I had planned ahead on the whole food and beverage front :)

Hope that you're warm as you read this post!

Snow much fun-- January 21, 2014

Emmy and Ellie-Kate get ready to slide down our hill!

WEEEEE!!

Well, originally, I thought that I'd spend today writing, working on the soap opera chapter for the celebrity health narratives book... Unfortunately, the weather caused a shift in plans. Instead, the girls and I relaxed over cinnamon rolls in the morning, played around with instruments upstairs and pretended to be on Disney's Magical Express in the basement. We got to go outside for a bit of sledding, but we really didn't have much of a snow base, and it was so cold. Afterwards, we went to the rec center so that I could walk, and the girls could shoot around. It was a very good day... (heavy sigh...) I wish that all days could just be about cinnamon rolls and Disney Princess Barbies and playing around with cellos and shooting basketballs and hanging out in the basement play area...

January 20, 2014-- Welcome, "Ollie," Ellie-Kate's new baby cello!

Ellie-Kate and "Ollie," her new "baby" cello

Ellie-Kate and Ollie-- all buckled up and ready to head back to Athens... Ellie-Kate had been begging for a cello after going with the family to pick up Emmy's full size back in the fall. We finally agreed to allow her to take lessons, and she's sooooooo ready. We listened to the Suzuki CD almost all of the way home, and she begged to get Ollie out of his case right away and practice. Let's hope that this enthusiasm and commitment continues!!

Ready for my laser treatment... January 9, 2014

Izzy is doing so well after his stroke, but he's still having trouble with moving his left front leg. We decided to try more laser treatments, and we're grateful that Dr. Kroner's office now has laser available. The treatments only last three minutes... a good thing, given that Izzy really hates his protective goggles :)

Ellie-Kate's first Upward basketball game of the season-- January 4, 2014

ELLIE-KATE BECK-ADEN!!!!

team meeting and snack time!

Ellie-Kate did a great job during the game. She shoots and dribbles so well, and we were really proud of how well that she did on offense... now, we're going to work on defense :)

Coldstone fun-- 1/3/14
