 Lester and Chelsea Meagan

Wow... After 52 weeks, over 2000 miles, and over 40 events, fairs, and festivals, Chelsea Meagan's reign came to an end. On the plus side, we met so many fun people and visited a lot of cool places that we wouldn't have experienced before. Chelsea Meagan got to obtain extremely valuable experience as an ambassador for our county. On the down side, we certainly got to see the not so nice side of people. Chelsea is blunt, yes, absolutely, and she will always tell people exactly what she's thinking and feeling, but I think that her beauty, brains, and potential in life proved to be much more of a problem for some people. Chelsea Meagan earned this title because of her many accomplishments in 4-H, Girl Scouts, and the Athens County Fair AND her ability to communicate those accomplishments to a panel of outside judges. She would be the very first to resist the idea that she won because she is pretty. Although she had so much love and support from so many of the fair board, at least one person could not do so, for whatever personal reasons/problems that she had, and it made our life very difficult for the entire year. This person didn't even bother to attend Chelsea's luncheon and even tried to throw a big snag in the day by lying about a key detail. Fortunately, we were able to prove that the lie occurred and able to proceed as planned. I'm stunned that an adult in a position of responsibility would be so childish and, really, just mean. Thus, even though this year should have been an entirely happy one, the continual and unnecessary drama cast a shadow over it, and, even though I will miss the people that we met from other places around the state, I was ready for Chelsea to give up her crown, be genuinely happy during a great fair week, and move on to Baylor where people celebrate success instead of finding ways to undermine it. Again, on the plus side, I am very grateful to the many people in and out of Athens County who commented so positively on Chelsea's reign-- quite simply, she visited more places than any other queen, earned cool recognitions (official and otherwise) from others during her travels, and brought more visiting royalty and their chaperones to the Athens County Royalty Tea than ever before. Over 80 people attended her tea. (Haven't had time to even sit down and count yet.) She did a great job, and these indicators all prove it. No one can take those accomplishments from her... but I'm sure that at least one person will do her/his best to try. As for me, I'm excited to re-focus my attention on the little girls and on enjoying Britti's engagement and Chelsea's adventure at Baylor!

The viewing on August 1 and the funeral on August 2 were very sad, especially for Grandma P. We were stunned by Wade's rapid decline, and we still can't believe that he's gone...

Emmy and Coco at the Ohio State Fair-- July 31, 2012

July 30, 2012: Ohio State Fair Dog Show

Emmy was a bit bummed that she and Coco didn't place on Monday for showmanship or rally or on Tuesday for obedience. However, she studied hard and knew her stuff, and she managed to have fun too!!

July 30, 2012: Ohio State Fair

Emmy showed Coco in the morning. She did great, but Coco was a bit shy around the male judge. Fortunately, Patricia joined her for the day so she had fun anyway.
 Ellie-Kate and Yogi :)

 July 30: Elena and Chelsea
7/30: Chelsea represented Athens County at the Ohio State Fair, participating in the afternoon parade and stopping in the Youth Development Building :)

7/30/12: Chelsea, Elena, Patricia, and Emmy after a long day of showing and riding :)

7/30/12: Ellie-Kate rides a tractor through the maze :)

July 23-July 28, 2012

July 23: Ellie-Kate had such an awesome t-ball season. She can hit off of the tee and off of a pitch; she loves to catch and throw, and the coach played her in the infield and twice at first base. Great season, Ellie-Kate!
Friday, July 27: Jack, Ellie-Kate, and Carter had a fun playdate at Carter's house :)

July 28: Emmy placed third in obedience.

Chelsea Meagan got up early, even though she arrived home late from line camp to such bad news, and passed out awards to the dog exhibitors at the Athens County Dog Show on July 28.
Emmy placed second in rally :)

YEAH-- Emmy won first place in showmanship!!

Emmy placed third in pro showmanship :)
July 28: What a great day for Emmy and Coco!!

Off to Baylor Line Camp-- July 23, 2012

Very early on Monday, July 23, Chelsea Meagan headed off to Baylor Line Camp! She had an amazing time. She loved her group, and she met a special friend, Lennon. Notably, camp officials confiscated cell phones so she was essentially shut off from the world for the five days of camp, but it enabled her to focus on making friends and many special memories of the Judge Baylor statue, the fountain, swings around campus, and Denny's :)

It also enabled us to shelter her from events in Virginia. On Monday, Wade took a turn for the worse, and he was placed on a ventilator. On Tuesday, his kidneys started to fail, and his situation deteriorated. On Thursday, July 26, right around noon, Wade passed away...

Chelsea returned home on Friday evening, and I allowed her to share about camp all of the way home. She gushed about the amazing time that she had experienced, and it was wonderful to hear about those moments before we got home. After we got into the house, I had to sit her down and tell her about Wade. She was very upset, but, ultimately, grateful that I waited to share the news until she got home. Very, very sad times and, once again, an emotional rollercoaster...
